A Scottish Exchange at Dundee

Expect lots of castles, lochs, pubs, kilts, ceilidhs and Munros (if you like) on exchange at Dundee. The design classes at Dundee are small but so caring! You’ll get your own desk and I was lucky enough to get the most welcoming advisor who helped make the most of my semester. I studied a narratives design studio subject within the third-year interior design course. My cohort was the size of a small class, and my assignment brief was very broad, so I really appreciated the chance to explore my personal creative interests. The teaching style was very unlike everything I was familiar with at UTS. The bulk of assessment was concerned with evidence of the entire creative process with a main emphasis on sketching and artist practices.

If you like hiking and beautiful scenery, joining the rucksack society was absolutely the highlight of my exchange. They take trips across Scotland every weekend and they provide all your equipment, transport – it’s amazing! I was lucky enough to take overnight weekend trips in beautiful places and guided up all sorts of Munroe’s (Scottish mountains). Beware of the cold though and bring lots of layers if you’re planning on visiting in winter!

Make sure to bring a nice dress and say yes to every ceilidh! There was always at least some kind of dance or event happening every week and trust me, ceilidhs are the best. Dundee itself feels more like a big Uni town than a city like Sydney. You won’t never have a society pub social to join and I think the night life is decent if that’s your thing! Only a 2-hour bus ride to both Edinburgh and Glasgow, it’s so easy to take day trips in your free time. In terms of accommodation, I would recommend Seabraes. The new block is technically nicer though I also loved staying in the older block.
