Exploring Data Protection and Ethics at the University of Barcelona
This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to study at the University of Barcelona (UAB), diving into the essential fields of data protection legislation and ethics. Even if I was studying for a degree in data analytics, I could learn how important protecting data is these days. My experience extended beyond the classroom as I immersed myself in Spanish culture, explored iconic sites, and created memories that would stay with me for years.
Morning Classes, Lasting Lessons
Our classes ran from 9 am to 1 pm, providing a balanced schedule for both learning and exploration. The course covered critical aspects of data protection, from GDPR compliance to understanding privacy in a digital landscape. Studying alongside other international students, such as the USA, enriched our discussions, bringing diverse perspectives on the universal challenges of data ethics and privacy.

A Cultural Milestone: Spain During Euro Season
My arrival in Spain coincided with the Euro season, adding an unexpected layer of excitement. I am especially a big football fan. Barcelona was alive with celebration as locals filled city squares to support their teams. Being part of the Euro festivities allowed me to experience the vibrant Spanish community spirit firsthand, creating unforgettable moments that brought a unique, festive atmosphere to my stay.
Exploring Barcelona’s Icons
Outside of class, I visited Barcelona’s cultural landmarks, and seeing the Sagrada Familia was a highlight. The basilica’s intricate architecture and deep history left me in awe. I also explored Park Güell, where the harmony of art, nature, and architecture echoed Barcelona’s blend of heritage and innovation.

Reflections on My Learning Journey
My time at UAB was more than an academic endeavour; it was an experience of growth and cultural enrichment. Studying data protection in a global context broadened my understanding of the field, reinforcing the critical role ethics play in an interconnected world. I returned with a deeper appreciation for privacy, respect, and responsibility in data handling—principles that I’ll carry forward in my studies and career.
For anyone considering a global program, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a unique opportunity to learn and grow while experiencing the beauty of a new place and connecting with people from all walks of life.
