International Internships Indonesia: Environmental Internship

Throughout my international internship I have enjoyed working in a new environment, adapting to different working customs and immersing myself in a vibrant culture. I loved engaging with local communities and learning about sustainable practices employed in the local agricultural and tourism industries. The hands-on experience in conservation efforts, such as wildlife protection and eco-friendly tourism initiatives was incredibly fulfilling. It was amazing to collaborate with like-minded individuals who were passionate about the environment and made the internship a truly memorable and impactful journey.

A cultural highlight was visiting the Tjong A Fie Mansion, which showcased a blend of Chinese, Malay and European architectural styles, reflecting Medan’s multicultural Heritage. A social highlight was being welcomed into local families’ home and being taught how to weave traditional baskets and make tempeh.

The Indonesian workplace environment has shaped my view on professional relationship, encouraging a more personal approach of creating friendships between individuals to foster effective working habits instead of fast paced objective driven approach. Learning Indonesian was super fun, it was a great way to connect with locals. Working within an Indonesian office was a great way to practice.

It was an honour to work with and be mentored by people who were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about conversation.
