Summer School at Nottingham Trent University
Hey, my name is Samiha and I am a third-year Communications and BCII student majoring in Digital and Social Media. I thought I’d make my winter break useful by applying to a Global Short Program. I have always wanted to do a longer exchange but I knew I was not ready for that commitment, so ‘Summer School’ at Nottingham Trent University turned out to be the perfect program. Before flying, I was actually not excited, questioning everything leading up to it however the entire two weeks went beyond my expectations.

Edinburgh, Scotland
I was able to take the Serious and Organised Crime unit, a course unlike others I’ve taken. The hands-on approach was incredibly engaging. It wasn’t just about sitting in lectures and taking notes; we dove into real-world case studies, collaborated in group projects, and had the opportunity to discuss complex criminal cases with experts in the field. It was refreshing and eye-opening, especially since I hadn’t experienced such practical, immersive learning before. This course truly broadened my understanding of global crime issues, and I can say with confidence that it shaped me both academically and personally.

But it wasn’t just the academics that made my experience unforgettable. Campus life at NTU was something I loved and will always cherish. The campus had such an inviting atmosphere, filled with vibrant student life. There was always something happening—whether it was a student-led event, or just grabbing coffee between classes with friends. It was easy to feel part of the community, and I quickly made friends that I know will be in my life for years to come.
One of the best parts of my experience was living in Nottingham. The city itself is beautiful, with a rich history tied to the legendary Robin Hood. I absolutely loved exploring the city and feeling immersed in the local culture. From the picturesque streets to the historical landmarks, Nottingham offered a perfect blend of urban excitement and quiet charm. I’m so glad I chose a city outside of London. While London is undoubtedly exciting, Nottingham gave me the chance to see a more authentic side of the UK. It reminded me that there’s so much more to the country than its tourist hotspots. The UK, as a whole, is stunning, and I can easily see myself returning for another short program or even living there temporarily—though probably anywhere but London, haha!

If you’re considering studying abroad in the UK, I highly recommend looking beyond London. Nottingham and NTU offered an immersive experience that allowed me to grow academically, make lifelong friends, and appreciate the beauty of the UK. One of the best parts about studying in the UK is how accessible other destinations are—like Edinburgh, just an hour’s flight from Birmingham. An exchange in the UK means you’re never far from exciting destinations, making every weekend an opportunity for new memories and discoveries.
