Seoul Architecture Study Tour
The Seoul architecture study tour was one of the most enriching subjects I have taken while at UTS and will remain a fond memory for quite some time. The tour was led by Alex Seo and Rafael Luna from the architecture faculty of UTS, both of whom possess a great local knowledge of the city from a personal and architectural perspective. We therefore not only saw and experienced great architectural works, but we were able to gain an in-depth insight into the fabulous range of urban conditions within Seoul.
As a regular tourist I would never have known where to start in a city with a population the size of my country, but through the guidance of the lecturers we experienced parts of the city which many travelers may not. Alongside the eye-opening cultural experiences, the opportunity to visit a handful of prominent architecture firms in Seoul was a highlight of the trip. Seeing the work environments and people working at these world class firms was professionally inspiring and rewarding.
Probably my favourite place we visited was Sayuwon (사유원), an arboretum for quince trees south of Seoul. The place was a wonderful escape from the busyness of Seoul and was filled with beautiful landscapes and trees, as well as monumental architectural works. We had a delightful lunch here and it was a great time to connect with the other students on the study tour.
Overall, the opportunity to travel to another country for a university subject is quite special and helps to form great friendships within the group of students undertaking the subject in unique way that certainly doesn’t occur in a regular subject. The trip has greatly increased my appreciation and aspirations for practicing architecture internationally and I hope to return to Seoul in the near future.
