Go on Exchange…and then thank me later

So, I have just about completed my first month on exchange from UTS and if you want the TL;DR, it is this – Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, let your university years go by without doing an exchange semester.

The opportunity to even just experience life in another city, another country, is something that I believe most people hope for one day… Dreaming of a life in the bustling Manhattan? Seduced by the beauty of Paris? Or have the layers of culture that London harbours all but convinced you that it is the place you belong? An exchange semester is exactly what you need. These dreams are common, but for the majority it may be too daunting, or too expensive, or too hard to get up and move halfway across the world. An Exchange Semester is a free trial, a test drive to a new life.

For myself, the one place that had been calling my name was Berlin. The beating heart of Europe, once at centre stage for its historical importance, now holding that same spotlight for it’s cultural diversity. It is a place that on the surface may seem intimidating, but under it’s tough exterior you will find a city that has its arms open wide, ready to take you in. Whatever your hobbies or interests, Berlin has people for you. Luckily enough however, I have not had to go searching very far for my people. Having a chance to experience life in another city is of course a hugely enticing part of exchange, but it falls second to one other very important payoff. The friends that you will meet.

If I were to leave today, I would already be able to bring back a crazy amount of beautiful memories and most importantly a lot of new friends who I hope to have for life. Not only have I had the comfort and support of the other UTS exchangees (who have quickly become very close friends of mine) but I have also had the pleasure of meeting students from all over the world! Together with my new intercontinental phonebook of friends I have had the most amazing time here in Berlin. From seeing the beautiful river Spree under the gorgeous Autumn sun, learning about the rich history of the city, and eating lots and lots of amazing food (including some homecooked meals from my new Korean friends!). There is so much to see out in the world and so many people to meet!

Overall, I don’t think it would be too extreme to say that Exchange is the best thing I have ever done, and I still have 5 more months baby!

From Sydney to Berlin, all with the support and help of my Uni. If you are thinking of going on Exchange, do it… and then thank me later.
