Navigating Academic Rigor and Cultural Richness: My Journey at UZH

The pursuit of a global exchange experience has always been something I’ve wanted to do. Unconventionally, I’m doing it now, as part of my UTS master’s degree program, with my host university being the University of Zurich (UZH) in Switzerland. As I cross the midway point of my exchange, I am immersed in unravelling the intricate calculus of deep learning algorithms, honing my culinary skills, and deftly balancing the demands of travel and study.

Academic Rigor at UZH

UZH’s approach is significantly different to that of UTS. In Data Science, UZH leans toward a more technical orientation, emphasizing theoretical foundations over practical applications. It’s intellectually stimulating but demands serious time investment. When choosing subjects, consider this carefully – however the foundational knowledge you gain will pay dividends down the academic road.

The Perks of Studying in Zurich

The perks of studying in Zurich? Top of the list is ASVZ, the sports centre where students can access gym facilities and engage in sports for free. It serves as an oasis for stress relief amid the academic rigors. Beyond campus, Switzerland unfolds as a tapestry of breathtaking mountains and natural beauty. And, of course, no Swiss experience is complete without savouring the iconic cheese, chocolate, and precision craftsmanship of Swiss watches.

Navigating the Cost of Living

Living in Switzerland presents its own set of challenges, chief among them being the high cost of living. Despite prior awareness, the reality can be startling. For example, a kebab costs around $18 AUD… To mitigate expenses, culinary prowess becomes indispensable – cooking at home not only saves money but is also healthier right? Opting for budget-friendly supermarkets like Lidl or exploring private-label options at Migros can further alleviate financial strain. Another thing to note is individuals aged 25 and above face higher transport costs and are not eligible for the biggest discounts such as for insurance.

Decisions Prior to Arrival

Two pivotal decisions shaped my Swiss adventure. First, I enrolled in the two-week intensive German language course. My German may still be a work in progress, but it’s been a fantastic way to make friends. Second, my persistence paid off when I secured a spot in a WOKO student dormitory. Living alongside other exchange students erased any initial apprehensions of being far from home without a support network. As I reflect on my journey thus far and prepare for the second half of my exchange, I am acutely aware of the unique blend of challenges and fulfillment that defines this experience. Growth and perspective manifest not merely in textbooks but in every Swiss mountain vista and shared meal with new friends. It’s an adventure worth experiencing!
